Bullaun stone in Kilmovee

Bullaun stone

What is recorded here

Situated towards the bottom of a gentle S-facing slope. An early ecclesiastical site which may have had an oval ecclesiastical enclosure (WA008-030002-) originally, but this is now truncated at S by an E-W field bank. A D-shaped bullaun stone of Old Red Sandstone conglomerate (dims. 0.4m x 0.33m) with a single basin (diam. 0.3m; D 0.15m) which is truncated at one side is built into the W face of the E wall of a NNW-SSE lane immediately to the W of the enclosure. Compiled by: Michael Moore. Date of upload: 20th July, 2010.
Likely dating to the early Christian period, the bullaun stone may have been used for ritual purposes, such as the preparation of holy water or as a pilgrim site. Such stones are often associated with local saints or folklore, though specific traditions for this example are not recorded.
