Bullaun stone in Coolfinn

Situated at the edge of the floodplain of the River Suir with the W-E Kilbunny Stream 30-40m to the SE. The Romanesque parish church of Guilcagh (WA008-010001-) is within a small rectangular graveyard (WA008-010002-). There are two bullaun stones outside the doorway. That to the N is an oval shale stone (dims. 0.85m x0.6m; H 0.35m) with a single basin (dims. 0.45m x 0.35m; D 0.1m). Compiled by: Michael Moore. Date of Upload: 3rd November, 2010.

Likely dating to the early medieval period, the bullaun stone may have been used for ritual purposes, such as the preparation of holy water, and is often associated with Christian or pre-Christian sacred sites. Its location near a Romanesque church suggests a possible link to early monastic activity or the adaptation of earlier religious traditions.
