Bullaun stone in Ballyduff East

Situated in scrub in Ballyduff village on a SE-facing slope. A bullaun stone, an irregularly-shaped stone (dims. 0.5m x 0.4m; T 0.1-0.22m) that has been fractured and has a single shallow basin (dimS. 0.3m; D 8cm) was found when a derelict house near the site was removed c. 1980. The bullaun stone is now at a nearby farmhouse (WA016-128----).

Likely dating to the early medieval period, bullaun stones were often associated with Christian holy sites and may have been used for ritual purposes such as the preparation of holy water or as pilgrimage markers. Some are linked to local saints or folklore, though specific traditions for this stone are not recorded.
