Building in Islands (crannagh By.)

A flat rather boggy island (L c. 2km; max. Wth c. 500m), prone to flooding, created by a fork in the River Nore which runs along the E and W sides of the island before reuniting to the S. According to Carrigan's unpublished notes (1903, 100), 'There were remains of houses or a mill on the island at Inchmore Castle formed by the Nore and the mill stream'. There are no buildings or mills indicated on the 1st (1839) ed. OS 6-inch map or the subsequent 1947 revision. No structure/s could be identified with confidence when the island was visited by the ASI in July 1987. The date and function of the buildings/mill mentioned by Carrigan is unknown.
