Building in High Island

This subrectangular building was uncovered during the course of excavations and conservation works on the monastic site on High Island from the mid-1990s to 2002 (Scally 2014, 136-8). It was built against the annulus surrounding ‘Cell A’ (GA021-026012-) and the W end of N wall of the monastic enclosure (GA021-026022-). Its W, N and E walls (Wth c. 1m; max. H 0.4m) were stone-faced with a rubble of core of clay/and or stone. The W and E walls were splayed. The monastic enclosure formed the S wall. Access was gained via a passage broken through the latter wall. The only features exposed within the interior were two post-holes in the NW area. Their small size indicated that they would not have been suitable to hold posts that would have been strong enough to support the superstructure for the building (Scally 2014, 136-8).
