Buck Island is a large circular crannog in Lough Oughter, County Cavan, about forty metres across and one hundred forty metres from the shore. Trees and bushes cover its surface, hiding the old shape of a place where people may have lived, worked and watched the water change. It stands apart from the land, yet it belongs to the region because it still holds the form of human choice.
