Explorer Tom Church in County Dublin has kept its old medieval tower while the rest got a 19th-century makeover. D'Alton called it neat, but I think 'annexed to an ancient tower' sounds fancier. It’s a prebend of St Patrick’s, so it’s definitely part of the big league.
post box922 ydExplorer Tom Post box in County Dublin is a cast-iron beauty from the mid-twentieth century that still works better than your email inbox. It represents the Posts & Telegraphs service with dignity. Give it a hug if you’re feeling generous.
Éamonn CeanntMemorial · 1609 ydExplorer Tom Éamonn Ceannt in County Dublin led the Easter Rising and got executed at Kilmainham. A heavy hitter for a memorial spot. Give him some respect if you pass by his marker today.
Toni'sPicnic place · 1.5 miExplorer Tom Toni's in County Dublin is having a picnic with itself. It claims to be a spot for snacks, but I suspect the sandwiches are long gone and only crumbs remain.
Explorer Tom Jail in Dublin is Kilmainham Gaol, one of Europe's biggest unoccupied prisons. It saw heroic and tragic events from the 1780s to the 1920s. Go in and feel the weight of all those political prisoners.
Explorer Tom Kilmainham Jail Museum in County Dublin is basically the same place as the gaol, but with a brochure. It’s like going to the same party twice. Grab a souvenir for me.
Executions of the leaders of the 1916 risingMemorial · 1.6 miExplorer Tom Executions of the leaders of the 1916 rising is pointing at Kilmainham Gaol like it’s blaming the building for everything. Fourteen guys got the axe, but this spot just wants you to feel dramatic about the whole bloody affair.
Explorer Tom Proclamation Sculpture in County Dublin is shouting its message from long ago, hoping someone finally listens. Tell me if you understood a word, or just nodded politely!
Explorer Tom Stone of Remembrance in County Dublin says their names live forever, which is a bold claim considering most of us forget our own names on Monday mornings, so maybe keep your head up if you hear whispers.
Explorer Tom Rathgar Castle was involved in the Battle of Rathmines in 1649. Beranger drew it in ruin in 1769, looking quite dramatic. Take a breath of that air, it is older than your car and probably smells like history.
Explorer Tom Portraine Castle is known as Stella’s Castle, which sounds like a romance novel that went off the rails in the garden. It had a hemp yard and a haggard, so it was basically a medieval boutique hotel. Go with someone who loves old stuff and watch them melt.
European Pear2.1 miExplorer Tom European Pear in County Dublin is filing a formal complaint with the council about how many people ignore it. It’s got all the fruit and none of the attention it deserves, frankly. Have a wander and a wonder at this neglected beauty.
