What is recorded here

Single-arched road bridge over a railway line, built in 1863. The bridge is constructed in squared granite rubble with the parapets and voussoirs in coursed rock-faced granite. The arch has a segmental head and above it is a dressed granite string course. The parapets have rounded granite coping.
This well preserved granite road bridge is part of the wider (and equally well preserved) 1860s-70s railway station complex and as such possesses what might be termed as ‘group value’.

Rathdrum Railway StationStation master's house · 93 yd

Explorer Tom Rathdrum Railway Station is actually the station master's house, which is part of the most complete railway complex in Wicklow. It’s well preserved and looks like it’s still waiting for the next train to arrive. Being part of a larger complex means it’s got company, but it’s definitely the star of the show. Gawk at it from the platform edge if you dare.

bridge93 yd

Explorer Tom Bridge in Glasnagret South has an imaginary twin across the sea that it argues with every time the tide comes in, which explains its dramatic arches. It’s a civil engineering masterpiece that looks like it’s flexing its muscles to impress the railway line passing over it. Watch your step, because it’s got a bit of a temper when people don’t appreciate its elegance.

Parnell National Memorial ParkPark · 365 yd

Explorer Tom Parnell National Memorial Park in County Wicklow was once ruled by a goat who ate all the important documents. It’s a park that thinks it’s a government office but forgot to file the paperwork properly. Bring your nan, she’ll know more than me.

Wicklow 400Memorial · 438 yd

Explorer Tom Wicklow 400 has an unlikely celebrity friend who is actually just a very confused deer statue. They’ve been best mates since 1606, mostly because nobody else wanted to talk to them. Bring biscuits, every good story needs biscuits.

IndicatedFairy fort / earthen ringfort · 582 yd

Explorer Tom Fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Glasnarget South once hosted a dramatic argument between two cows over a patch of grass, and the bank still remembers. It’s a huge circle with a fosse that looks like it’s waiting for a sequel to happen. Perfect place to be dramatically windswept.

Enclosure in Glasnarget NorthEnclosure · 1394 yd

Explorer Tom Enclosure in Glasnarget North is an oval enclosure that exists mostly on old maps because it has a prophecy about it that never came true. It’s invisible at ground level, which is perfect if you want to pretend you found something real. Bring sandwiches, the gulls will thank you.

Noble Fir1.2 mi

Explorer Tom Noble Fir in County Wicklow is in a bitter feud with the next village over something daft like who has better fences. The leaves are all ruffled up about it and refusing to settle down properly. Spot the oldest stone and give it a name.

European Yew1.2 mi

Explorer Tom European Yew in County Wicklow was once offered by a very confused cow who thought it looked like premium hay. The tree declined politely, mostly because cows are terrible negotiators and smell absolutely dreadful. Bring your nan, she'll know more than me.

Viewing TowerHeritage attraction · 1.3 mi

Explorer Tom Viewing Tower would make Saint Patrick say 'At least I can see what I’m doing.' It has a slide in the middle that kids find faster than the view. Best seen with a hangover and a sausage roll.

Carrick MountainMountain / peak · 4.4 mi

Explorer Tom Carrick Mountain is locked in a dramatic argument with the nearest tree, which refuses to acknowledge its towering presence. They’ve been shouting at each other since the last ice age, or so I’m told. Bring a flask and pretend you own the place.

Shay Elliott memorialMemorial · 4.7 mi

Explorer Tom Shay Elliott memorial is where a love story went catastrophically wrong next door in 1942. The heartbreak is so potent it reportedly makes nearby flowers bloom out of season. Look up, the best bit is always higher than you think.

Poulanass WaterfallWaterfall · 7.0 mi

Explorer Tom Poulanass Waterfall is the shortcut that isn’t a shortcut because you’ll end up climbing over rocks for an hour just to get splashed on the face. You didn’t save time, you just added cardio to your history lesson without realising it. Bring your own legend, I've run out.
