Bridge in Caher East,kilgortaree

On the Down Survey barony map (1655-6) for Glanarought, a bridge, named 'Roghty bridg', is indicated spanning the Roughty River between the townlands of Caher East and Kilgortaree. The precise location of this bridge is not known. A ford is marked on the 1846 OS 6-inch map in the approximate location of where the bridge is indicated on the earlier Down Survey map. Lansdowne (1937, 102) recorded that the river was crossed by a stone bridge at Cahir [Caher] but that this bridge was destroyed by floods prior to 1764. It was subsequently replaced by another bridge downriver at Gortagass/Gortalinny North, which has also since been replaced by a 19th-century bridge (KE093-102----).
