Brides Well

Incorporated into a low stone wall (L 5.35m; H 0.3-0.6m) aligned NE-SW at the bottom of a gentle NW-facing slope that has a small wood in a pasture landscape. The well is dedicated to St Bridget and was recorded by John O’Donovan in the 1830s (O’Flanagan 1931, 2, 38). The rectangular opening (Wth 0.45m; H 0.48m) leads to a circular stone-lined well (diam. c. 0.9m; D below sill 0.6m), and it is covered by lintels. It has water and is the source of a stream that surfaces c. 10m to the NE and flows off to the N. The well is still venerated and has some offerings. A low wall (L 3.8m; max. H 0.3m) running NW from the SW end of the wall with the well creates a triangular court area in front of it. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of revised upload: 14 September 2015
