Brewery in Gowran

According to Drennan (1965, 55), there was a brewery S of St Mary’s parish church (KK020-060006-) which was associated with the Knights Hospitallers. Drennan (ibid.) notes that, 'Tradition associates them with the old Brewery at the bottom of the present Mill Hill, which would be continuous with their lands, on the north side of the stream. The brewery was small - about the size of a big room and the surrounding wall about one foot [c. 0.3m] could be traced 40 years ago [c. 1920s]. The brewery was referred to in the reign of Elizabeth as the "old brewery" when the Mill was referred to as "The Lords New Mill"'. It was located near a well (KK020-060021-) known as the Brewery Well which supplied Gowran Castle with piped water (ibid.). Drennan (ibid., 58) also mentions, 'Fr. Healy refers to the "Lords newe Myll" as being on the old coach road to Waterford and says, "across the river was old brewery of much earlier date"'. The precise location of the brewery is unknown.
