Brendan Moloney was born in Beaufort, Killarney, County Kerry, on 18 January 1989, before joining the Nottingham Forest Youth Academy. He captained the reserve team that narrowly missed the title in 2006-07, drawing praise from manager Colin Calderwood for fantastic potential. After debuting against Gillingham in March 2007, he moved through loans at Chesterfield, Rushden & Diamonds, Notts County and Scunthorpe United, scoring memorable goals including a 25-yard strike for Chesterfield and a debut strike for Notts County.
