What is recorded here

Kilculleen in County Limerick held an unrepaired castle and bawn belonging to John Borke when the 1654-56 Civil Survey recorded the place. The bawn may have stood empty, its stones exposed and doors dark while the wider region remained disturbed. Nobody has yet identified the precise spot, so the wall and castle must be imagined rather than pointed to. That absence does not diminish them; it keeps the local landscape uncertain and alive.

The precise location of a castle (LI014-106----) and bawn in the townland of Kilculleen not been identified. The 1654-56 Civil Survey of Limerick recorded that John Borke was the owner of 'a Castle and a bawen unrepaired' in the townland of Kilculleen (Simington 1938, 84).
