Bawn in Cregmoher, County Clare. A bawn is a defended enclosure or homestead, often medieval or later, marked by a wall, ditch or earthworks. It may have housed a family, stored grain or sheltered people when roads were dangerous. The name preserves that function even when the shape has faded under grass or neglect.
