Cody's Castle in Castletown stood almost perfect in 1800, but human hands or time have since reduced it to a south east gable and faint bawn foundations. The loss is not mysterious; it is ordinary. People took stone, forgot the name, or left the place exposed to rain. What remains is not a tragedy but a before-and-after snapshot: a tower house tall enough to mark the horizon, now a gable waiting for imagination.

Known as 'Cody's Castle', it was in almost perfect condition in 1800 (Carrigan 1905, vol. 2, 281). Now only the South East gable survives of the tower house (LA028-042). Foundations of bawn wall (LA028-0420010 are visible to the west. Described by Carrigan as 'Cody's castle from which it was originally called, stood within a raised area, enclosed by a wall, now almost entirely broken down. In 1800 the castle, was almost perfect, but most of it has been destroyed since then. At present all that remains is part of a side-wall 30 or 40 ft. high and eleven feet thick at the ground.' Cody's Castle, also known as the Bawn in Castletown, was likely built by a local Gaelic family in the late 15th or early 16th century. It is remembered for its near-perfect condition in the 19th century and as an example of a well-preserved tower house and bawn complex in the region.

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
