Bawn in Castlelake, County Tipperary, is a fortified enclosure linked to an old tower house now hidden inside an 18th-century home and distillery. In 1654, a survey recorded a thatched house with a bawn on lands once held by Edward Boyton, an Irish Papist alderman from Cashell. The high stone wall still stands beside the River Suir, marking a place where medieval defence, colonial survey and industrial reuse all collided.

In gently undulating terrain, the River Suir flows NE-SW c. 150m to the N. According to the Civil Survey (1654-6) 'There is on the sd lands an old castle a thatcht house with a Bawne about it' (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 241). The 1640 the townland was known as 'Ballytarsny-Mckeorish' and the proprietor was 'Edward Boyton of Cashell Alderman. Irish Papist' (ibid.). This bawn is associated with a tower house (TS060-0116001-) which is incorporated into an 18th-century house which has an associated distillery complex.
