On 7 August 1643, Lord Moore’s Royalist force advanced into a narrow killing field near Portlester, drawn forward by a feigned retreat and then raked by musket fire from a flour mill. Moore attacked the mill and ford twice, failing both times, and while he watched the fighting he was struck dead by an artillery shot. His army broke and fled, leaving Owen O’Neill victorious with comparatively light losses.
