This white commemorative plaque records: Bathurst Boatyard. This site and two others north of King John's Bridge, were once occupied by BATHURST, boat builders. They were founded in the mid 1800's and by 1944 employed c100 workers, making them Tewkesbury's third largest business employer. They built leisure craft-canoes, skiffs, motor and sail boats, cruisers, larger passenger vessels-many for their own hire fleet. However, during WWII they built 72ft Harbour Defence Motor Launches for the Admiralty and serviced high speed Air Sea Rescue Launches for the Royal Air Force. After operating for over a century under several ownerships, in the mid 1960s they ceased trading. Recorded plaque organisation: Tewkesbury Civic Society.

Bathurst Boatyard was a significant Tewkesbury employer from the mid-1800s to the mid-1960s, known for building various leisure and military craft, including Harbour Defence Motor Launches during WWII.
