Barrow

Barrow, ring-barrow

What is recorded here

At 567 feet above the Kildare hills, a compound ring-barrow holds a low oval mound inside a broad berm, shallow fosse, and outer bank stretching fifty-four metres across. O'Riordain cut into the site in 1950 but found no burial or object, leaving its purpose still unspoken. The ground may have served as a watched boundary, a seasonal gathering place, or a marker for a lost lineage.
A level circular area enclosed by a fosse and external bank (overall diam. 28m) with an entrance at SW. Partially excavated by O'Riordáin (1950, 258-9: Site 5) but no burial or finds were uncovered. Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy Date of upload: 10 June 2011
A ring-barrow, likely dating to the Early Bronze Age, associated with funerary practices of the period. Its construction as a fosse-enclosed barrow reflects a regional variant of burial monument in Ireland.
