Barrow

At the top of a low NE–SW ridge overlooking the Burren plateau, within the NE section of a forest plantation, though the monument itself and the area immediately surrounding it have not been planted. Slieve Elva is visible to the NW. Listed as ‘Enclosure’ in the RMP (1996). This subcircular ring-barrow (max. est. dims. 41.7m N–S, 38.7m E–W) is defined by slightly domed central area (21.6m N–S; 19.9m E–W; H 0.6-0.8m) surrounded by a flat-bottomed fosse (av. Wth 2.5–3.7m; D 0.3–0.4m) and an outer bank (base Wth 3–4.5m; Wth at top 1.5–2m; int. H 0.3–0.4m; ext. H 0.2–0.5m). Rushes are growing in the fosse, which widens to 5m at S and narrows to 1.5m at N. The outer bank is best preserved from E to W but is hardly visible from NNW to E. Gaps at SE (Wth 6.5m) and NW (Wth 7.5m) do not appear to be original.
