Barrow

In reclaimed pasture, abutting a townland boundary with Castlefarm to S. Depicted on 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch map as a suboval-shaped platform (52m E-W; 47m N-S) with fosse to W and curvilinear drainage ditch from N-E-SE, intersected by road at S. Described by Westropp (1922, 71) as: ‘There is a large, conspicuous hill, north-east from Knockainey, and about four miles from it, called Cromwell Hill. The only antiquities known to me between the two ridges are a stone circle [LI032-099----] and earth-ring [LI032-101----], cut by a laneway, in Ballinamona, an outlier of the Loch Gur group’. Upstanding monument is visible a roughly circular-shaped ring-barrow on Archaeological Survey of Ireland aerial photographs (ASIAP 351, 1 & 352, 0), on OSi orthoimages taken 2005-2012. Well preserved monument (overall diam. c. 54m) visible on Digital Globe orthoimages taken 2011-2013 as a circular-shaped area (diam. c. 28m) defined by a scarp with fosse and outer bank with external fosse which have been intersected at SSE by public road. Monument visible on Google Earth orthoimage taken 20/03/2018, where it is truncated by a road running NE-SW across the SE edge and is flanked by a curvilinear land drain from NW-N-NE-E. A ring-barrow, likely dating to the Early Bronze Age, associated with burial practices in Atlantic Europe. Its earthwork features and ditch system suggest a ceremonial or funerary function, though specific significance remains unrecorded.
