Barrow

Unlocated possible mound barrow within the townland of Rathnew that was described in 1928 as following; 'An earthwork identical in character with the apparent Tumulus, no. 2 (WM024-058----) above. Breadth of outer ring, 9' [2.7m], of fosse 9' [2.7m], diameter of central mound 21' [6.4m]; depth of fosse, 1' 3" [0.38m]; total diameter 57' [17.4m]. For some reason a section had been cut away on the eastern side. We trenched through this earthwork, but found even less than in no. 2, for it did not contain so much as a construction of stones' (Macalister and Praeger 1928, 83). Annotated Tumulus No. 13 on Macalister and Praeger's plan of monuments on the Hill of Uisneach (Ibid. 76). Monument described in 1976 as no surface remains visible of this tumulus. Only a low, naturally formed hill traversed by a field fence running N-S was located in this area. A ring-barrow (WM024-202----) located in same area as the barrow marked 'Tumulus 13' on 1928 plan of the Hill of Uisneach. However, the dimensions recorded by Macalister and Praeger for this barrow suggest that it was more than twice the size of the ring-barrow, and is therefore likely to represent a separate monument, no obvious trace of which survives today.
