Barrow

Barrow, mound barrow

What is recorded here

Abbylond Barrow stands on a glacial ridge above Dunmore, its six-metre mound still visible beside the Sinking River and old fair green. Bradley and Dunne identified a shallow ditch and linear bank nearby, suggesting a hollow way approached the burial place. Yet elsewhere in Abbeyland, local information claims clearance destroyed a similar mound, leaving only a low hummock behind. One survived ordinary life; the other vanished under the spade.
In flat pastureland. Marked on the 1946 revision of the OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 15m) with two trees in the interior. According to local information, a low mound here was destroyed during land clearance. Apart from a low hummock, no visible surface trace survives. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 25 July 2019
A Neolithic mound barrow, likely dating to the Early to Middle Bronze Age. Its partial destruction during land clearance limits understanding of its original form and wider significance.

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
