Barrow

Barrow, ditch barrow

What is recorded here

Five shallow ditches circle the wet Camoge floodplain near Rathanny, marking a burial place old enough to vanish from standard maps. One barrow keeps a faint seven-metre shadow in the grass while a stone fort watches from twenty-four metres away. Together they form a hidden chamber where the river, dead people and memory still touch.
In wet pasture on the floodplains of the Camoge River that forms townland boundary with Rathanny. One of a group of five ditch-barrows (LI040-270001/002;004/005-), an inland promontory fort (LI040-271001) lies 24m to the W. Not marked on OSi historic maps. Identified by the Bruff aerial photographic survey in 1986 (Bruff 138.03, AP 5/2101) as a circular cropmark of possible barrow. Faint trace of monument visible as a circular cropmark (diam. c. 7m) on Digital Globe taken between 2011-13 and on Google Earth orthoimages. See attached Bruff photograph labelled 138.03, oblique aerial photograph (ASIAP (347) 24, 17) and Google Earth orthoimages. Compiled by: Fiona Rooney Date of upload: 8 July 2021
