Barberstown Castle rose in County Kildare around 1288 when Nicholas Barby took land once held by the Fitzgerald family. It has changed hands repeatedly, become a hotel in 1971, and survived enough alteration to wear Norman, Elizabethan and Victorian marks at once. A tunnel hidden until 1996 still links the castle to the nearby church in Straffan, perhaps carrying people through darkness when the Penal Laws made ordinary roads dangerous.
