What is recorded here

Ballyvodane Castle was a Mac Carthy stronghold in County Cork, but a bulldozer erased most of it before the stone could resist memory. One north wall still stands, barely higher than a child, while the rest joined the field fence or vanished into pasture. The castle did not fall to siege or time; it was removed, perhaps for convenience, perhaps for forgetting. What remains is not ruin but subtraction, a rectangle of absence marked only by a line of sandstone and the shape of the hole it left behind.
In pasture; fragmentary remains of structure shown as complete rectangle on 1842 OS 6-inch map, incorporated into field fence system, in NE corner of "haggard" field. According to Healy (1988, 19), much of structure 'bulldozed some years ago'; part of N wall survives: mortared sandstone rubble construction (L c. 10.5m; H c. 1.4m) with base batter on N face. No trace of S or W walls but field fence to E (missing its outer facing and much overgrown) may incorporate part of E wall. Remains of a Mac Carthy castle (ibid.). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
Ballyvodane Castle was likely built in the late medieval period by a local Gaelic family, though specific builders or occupants are not recorded. Its importance lies in its historical association with regional landholding patterns and its depiction in early 19th-century maps, offering insight into the landscape and architecture of the time.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
