Ballynookan Fort is a 50m earthen ringfort in woodland pasture beside the River Maigue, marked on maps since 1840 but hidden from modern satellites by dense trees. It sits 200m from the medieval church of Anhid, suggesting the fort and chapel shared one lived landscape before timber swallowed the rampart. The fort may have been a defensive stronghold, a seasonal settlement, or a boundary marker for the river valley, but its exact purpose is no longer visible.

In woodland pasture, 75m E of the River Maigue and the townland boundary with Anhid East. The medieval church and graveyard of Anhid (LI030-064001/3-) is located 200m to SW and an enclosure (LI030-066----) is located 185m to SE. The site is depicted as an enclosure on the 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch map and is later depicted as an embanked enclosure on the 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch map (ext. dims. c. 50m N-S; 50m E-W), no fosse is depicted on the map. Annotated ‘Ballynookan Fort' on the Cassini ed. OSi 6-inch map. The ringfort is not visible on the OSi orthoimage taken 2005-12. On the Digital Globe orthoimages taken 2011-2013 the site is covered by a linear woodland that runs along the E bank of the river. The enclosure is not visible on Google Earth orthoimages taken 28/06/2018 and 14/02/2020 due to dense tree coverage.
