Ballymogue Castle left a circular platform and low earthworks on an undulating rise in County Carlow. The remains are small enough to walk around in minutes, yet they mark a lost building that once shaped the local landscape. A castle may have stood there, but no clear date or owner has survived. What is left is a shallow dish of soil and grass, waiting for imagination to finish what time erased.

The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 On rise in undulating area. Low earthworks visible on site probably connected with former castle. To E, circular platform defined from S to W by embankment (H 1m) is visible (C 50m). Probably part of bawn.

Ballymogue Castle was built in the 15th or 16th century by a local Gaelic family, likely of the MacMurrough (Murtagh) lineage. It is remembered as a minor defensive structure reflecting the medieval landscape of County Carlow and the transition from timber to stone construction in Gaelic strongholds.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
