Ballyhowly Castle stands as a ruined tower house in County Mayo, its stone walls reduced to a broken silhouette against the sky. The structure has lost every room, roof and door, leaving only the bare fact that people once built high walls to keep out danger. What those walls kept out, and who stood behind them, has disappeared with the timber and plaster.
