Ballydine Castle stood near the River Suir in County Tipperary, a handsome little structure belonging to James Mandevile when surveyed in 1654. The manor answered to the Earle of Ormond and kept its own court, leet and barron, giving the surrounding land a rare legal life of its own. The house later vanished beneath the Merck Sharp Dohme Plant, leaving no visible fabric above ground. What remains is a clean absence: a castle reduced to a boundary line on modern property, its rooms forgotten but its name still turning in the survey.

According to the Civil Survey (1654-6) 'Halfe of colpe of Ballydeyne' was owned by 'James Mandevile...Esqre. Irish Papist' and upon his land stood 'a hansome little castle wanting repaire situate neere the River of Shewer' (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 266). Also 'Ballydeyne is and was anciently held a Mannor in free and Comon Soccage from the Earle of Ormond with Suit of Court=leet and Court=Barron and severall other Privileges' (ibid.). The castle was provisionally located to Ballydine House, on the N bank of the river Suir. The house, which was demolished c. 25 years ago, is now on the property of the Merck Sharp Dohme Plant. Ballydine Castle was held in the mid-17th century by James Mandeville, an Irish Catholic esquire, and is noted in the 1654–5 Civil Survey as a "handsome little castle" in need of repair. It is remembered as an example of early modern Irish domestic architecture and as part of the historical landscape of County Clare.
