Ballincollig Castle is a Norman stronghold on a limestone summit above the Maglin Valley, occupied from the fifteenth to seventeenth century by the Barrett family. The original keep, curtain wall and two towers still stand in ruin above a natural cavern and the remains of a moat. The Barretts purchased the estate from Robert Coll in 1468 and made it their principal seat until the early 1600s.
