Augustinian priests called the Priory of the English in Demesne OF Down their own, yet they shared St.John the Baptist with older Irish faiths. Medieval men may have argued over language, prayer and ownership while standing inside the same sacred walls. The priory preserved both traditions because Downpatrick already belonged to everyone who loved that place.
The official Northern Ireland record identifies this as AUGUSTINIAN PRIORY: ST.JOHN THE BAPTIST; PRIORY OF THE ENGLISH. Recorded period: MEDIEVAL; MED/L.MED. The official map point was placed at the centre of the recorded archaeological site from the source map reference.
