Aubrey Thomas de Vere was born in Adare, County Limerick, the son of Sir Aubrey de Vere, 2nd Baronet, and Mary Spring de Vere. His father managed the vast Curraghchase estate while struggling to dispose of the financially draining island of Lundy, a burden inherited from his own father. The young poet grew up within this world of ancient land ownership and familial financial strain, carrying the de Vere name that traced back to Norman times.
