At 11:30 am on 27 August 1979, Louis Mountbatten and three others boarded Shadow V in Mullaghmore harbour, unaware that Thomas McMahon had packed fifty pounds of gelignite below deck the night before. The remote detonator screamed through the wooden hull, drowning the earl, his grandson Nicholas, Lady Brabourne, and young Paul Maxwell in Atlantic foam. McMahon and McGirl fled east but were stopped at a Granard checkpoint, their careless paperwork exposing the brutality they had hidden inside a harmless fishing boat.
assassination of Louis Mountbatten, 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma is an assassination in County Sligo, Ireland.
