Armorial plaque (present location) in Slane

Two medieval graveslabs and other features from the parish church of Stackallan (ME018-030----) are now attached to the W wall of the vestry of the Church of Ireland church at Slane (ME019-023004-). The escutcheon from over the doorway is the arms of Barnewall, and the inscription is to Sir Barnaby Barnewall, who died in 1493, and his wife, Margaret Plunkett. According to du Noyer (1891) the inscription reads: ‘Scutum Barnabe Barnewelle / Militis Secundam judiciari / de banco Capitale regis. / Margareta Plunket fuit uxor’ (Leask 1960, 2, 31-2; Bradley and King 1985, 151) Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload; 2 October, 2014
