Ardvilling

Detached three-bay single-storey with attic accommodation gate lodge, built c. 1860, having gabled breakfront to front (north) elevation and corbelled pitched slate roof over door. Pitched slate roofs with rendered chimneystack, timber bargeboards and cast-iron rainwater goods. Roughcast rendered walls with render quoins. Square-headed openings with cast-iron mullioned windows with render block-and-start surrounds, and timber panelled double-leaf doors. Rubble stone boundary wall to west. Entrance to country house to north having cast-iron double-leaf gates flanked by square-profile cut limestone piers with chamfered corners, with curved cast-iron railings and cut limestone plinth, flanked in turn by square-profile cut limestone piers with chamfered corners.

Modestly sized carefully designed and detailed gate lodge, evidently informed by the cottage ornee motif and picturesque movement with steeply pitched roofs and decorative detailing sited in wooded area. Highly decorative site entrance showing evidence of nineteenth-century craftsmanship and design providing prelude to country house. Both add architectural interest to rural road, and form notable small group with Ardvilling and its outbuildings.
