Architectural fragment in Newtown OR Skirk

Architectural fragment

What is recorded here

Skirk castle lost its chimney before the graveyard claimed the stone. Whether the fragment still marks a grave or has surrendered to soil, the castle gave up one of its loud parts to the dead.
In undulating countryside. Reference to an architectural fragment here in graveyard (LA021-01002-) originally part of Skirke castle chimney. (Carrigan 1905, vol. 2, 135). No visible surface remains. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Laois' (Dublin Stationery Office, 1995) compiled by P. David Sweetman, Olive Alcock and Bernie Moran. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 17 December 2007
