Altar

In pasture broken by rock outcropping. Flat slab of sandstone (L 0.88m; Wth 0.61m; H 0.1m) with small Latin cross (0.6m x 0.4m) inscribed on outer (SW) face; resting on stone-built base. Upright slab (now broken) on top of altar has fragmentary inscription: 'ALTAR OF PENAL DAYS'. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Linked to Saint Dur or a local early Christian tradition, the site may have been used for ritual or devotional purposes, as indicated by the Latin cross and stone base. The broken upright slab suggests possible use in a memorial or liturgical function.
