Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Tullagh, County Cork: a 34m circular raised area with two 0.8m earthen banks, a fosse between them and a 4m gap to the southwest. It sits on a south-facing pasture slope, with old cultivation ridges crossing the inside from north to south. People may have lived there, farmed there or fled danger through that broken entrance; the fairies, according to local story, kept what was left behind.
In pasture, on S-facing slope. Circular raised area (34m N-S) enclosed by two earthen banks (H 0.8m) with intervening fosse. Break in both banks to SW (Wth 4m). Cultivation ridges cross interior on N-S axis. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
