All Hallows College

Detached four-bay single-storey gate lodge, built c. 1860, having gable-fronted entrance bay, and four-bay projection to north (side) elevation added c. 1950. Pitched slate roof with terracotta ridge cresting, red brick chimneystack with terracotta stringcourse and brackets, timber bargeboards with decorative perforations on overhanging verges; replacement uPVC rainwater goods. Ruled-and-lined rendered walling with red brick block-and-start quoins and surrounds to openings. Segmental-headed window openings, paired to front elevation and to return, with cut granite sills and one-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows. Segmental-headed doorway with timber battened door. Coursed rubble limestone, sandstone and red brick boundary wall, terminating in gateway to south of gate lodge. Gateway has tooled limestone piers with plinths, chamfered shouldered corners, gabled caps with roll detail to apex, and carved Maltese cross in round recesses. Incised lettering to eastern pier to vehicular gateway with lettering 'All Hallows Missionary College'. Double-leaf timber panelled vehicular gate. Shouldered square-headed pedestrian entrance comprising tooled limestone surround with chamfered detail to reveal, and single-leaf timber panelled gate.

The boundary walls defining the precincts of All Hallows College form a significant and highly visible component of the streetscape in Drumcondra, making an interesting visual contribution to the character of the district. The gate lodge and entrance gates at the southwest are distinctive structures, providing a suitable introduction to the formal landscape within. The lodge has notable decorative timber bargeboards and a chimneystack that are intentionally visible above the boundary wall, illustrating the importance the lodge's design for the college. The retention of salient features, such as timber sliding sash windows and the fine detailing to the carved limestone gateway, enhance the heritage significance of the building. All Hallows College was founded as a seminary in 1842 by Reverend John Hand and educated generations of priests and professionals.
