What is recorded here

Wooden Cross marked a busy market in North Galway, though no stone or wood remains visible today. The name survived on maps and in local memory, pointing to a place where people gathered, traded and lived beside the church. The graveyard has taken the cross back into soil and silence, but the market still moves through the land beneath the grass.

In an overgrown graveyard adjacent to a church (GA071-076001-). Marked on OS 6-inch maps as 'Wooden Cross'. Of it, the OS letters (O'Flanagan 1927, Vol. 1, 288) record the tradition that 'there was a market held [here], the cross of which still remains'. No visible surface trace survives.
