Cuan Mhuire

Detached three-bay two-storey over basement house, built c.1870, having central breakfront to front (south-east) elevation having uPVC porch to front, canted three-bay end elevations, multiple-bay block to rear of possibly same date, and later L-plan two-storey block to north-east, recent single-storey extension to latter and to rear of main block. Flat roof to earlier sections, with overhanging eaves, two rendered chimneystacks to rear, and cast-iron rainwater goods. Cross finial to L-plan block. Frieze of flat paterae below eaves. Hipped roofs to later block, with gable facing south-east. Hipped roof to recent block. Rendered and painted walls, having parallel limestone quoins to front corners and breakfront. Rusticated ashlar to basement. Segmental-headed windows to basement with vermiculated keystones above openings. Square-headed openings to ground and first floors with replacement uPVC windows throughout, and tooled limestone sills. Pediment to first floor window in gable of L-plan block, and some round-headed windows to ground floor of same block. Entrance porch reached by tiled steps with rendered parapet walls. Set in own extensive grounds with gardens to front.

Once the home of Justice of the Peace, Mr James Dillon Meldon, this house and its lands were bought by the Daughters of Charity in 1927 and later by the Ursuline Order which ran a domestic science schoo here. In the 1970s and 1980s it was home to the Sacred Heart Missionaries and was a novitiate used for young men entering the priesthood. Now owned by Cluain Mhuire, a charity run by Sr Consilio of the Mercy Order, it is a residential rehabilitation and treatment centre. Extensive remodelling has extended the original dwelling, but the stone quoins, rusticated basement and canted bays are of particular note.
