Church in Grange East

In a farmyard to the E of a tower house (GA070-067----). This poorly preserved rectangular church (E-W 15.2m ext.; N-S 5.4m ext.; wall T 1.1m), which was brought to our attention by Dr. Christy Cunniffe, is aligned E-W. Both gables are heavily overgrown with ivy and mature ash trees are growing against its external face at the NE corner and in the interior at the SW corner. The W end of the N wall survives almost to its original height but otherwise most of this wall has been levelled. The S half of the E gable and the entire S wall (H 1.5m; T 0.5m) have been rebuilt as a farm wall delimiting the the N side of a laneway. Surviving architectural features include the N half of the E window. It is defined by three finely cut, dressed stones. A chamfered and rebated sill stone (Wth 0.16m) indicate it was a lancet window. Some dressed stone has been incorporated into the rebuilt section of the E gable; in the S wall a chamfered stone is visible that appears to the be the opposite of the middle stone of the lancet window. Tooling on it suggests a 15th-/16th-century date (pers. comm. Dr. C. Cunniffe). The interior of the church is is strewn with densely overgrown boulders - possibly collapsed material from the walls. It is locally believed to be the site of a children's burial ground (GA070-067003-).
