The Bristol & West of England Society for Women’s Suffrage, one of the earliest groups in the UK campaigning for women's right to vote, first met at this site on 24 January 1868. It played a key role in the long struggle for women's suffrage, which culminated in women over 30 gaining the vote in 1918 and full equality in 1928.
