What is recorded here
Wingfield Castle is a fortified manor house closely tied to the Wingfield and de la Pole families. Through marriage it became a seat of the Earls and Dukes of Suffolk, and Charles Brandon and Mary Tudor later used it while travelling through the county.
Who built and held it
The castle became the ancestral home of the Wingfields and then of their de la Pole heirs. Catherine Wingfield's marriage to Michael de la Pole brought the house to the future Earl of Suffolk.
Attack, change and use
The de la Pole dukedom was surrendered in 1493, but Henry VIII created the title again for Charles Brandon in 1514. Brandon and Mary Tudor used Wingfield during journeys through Suffolk.
What survives
The Grade I fortified manor survives as a private house, retaining the enclosed character that made an elite medieval home defensible.
Why it mattered
Wingfield joined family inheritance, royal favour and the rise and fall of the Suffolk dukedom in a residence that remained a home as well as a stronghold.
