Wind Mill

A windmill is marked on the Down Survey (1656-8) barony map of Forth and the parish map of Carne at Clougheast (4). According to the Book of Survey and Distribution (1660s) it would have been owned by James Codd of Clough East (WX053-032001-) c. 1640 (Simington 1953, 305). An operating windmill is marked as on the 1839 ed. of the OS 6-inch map but it is described as disused on the 1940 ed. It is situated on a fairly level landscape. This is an ivy-covered cylindrical tower (ext. diam. 4.6m; int. diam. 3.1m) of three storeys surviving to a height of c. 5m. There is only one doorway (Wth 0.62; H 1.72m) at E with a window (Wth 0.5m; H 0.9m), possibly adapted from a doorway, opposite it at W. Inside the W doorway steps projecting from the inner face of the wall on the S side rise to the first floor. The joists of the upper floors were set directly into the walls. A window can be discerned at the first floor over the E doorway, but other features might be obscured.
