Robert of Mortain raised Wimble Toot Castle near Babcary between 1067 and 1069, turning a ridge into a watchtower over the River Cary. Its circular earthwork still stands twenty-seven metres across, with ditches cutting through the grass like forgotten scars. The castle guarded a navigable stretch of river and the nearby settlement of Ilchester, forcing Norman traffic through a narrow corridor where arrows could fall. What once seemed a burial mound or windmill base now reveals itself as a military instrument, shaping movement and fear along the Fosse Way.
