This slate commemorative plaque records: In this house was born on April 7th 1770 William Wordsworth, Poet Laureate. He died at Rydal Mount Grasmere April 23rd 1850. Interred in Grasmere Churchyard. Dorothy his sister 1771 - 1855 Recorded plaque organisation: Wordsworth Society.
William Wordsworth was a major English Romantic poet who, with Samuel Taylor Coleridge, helped launch the Romantic Age in English literature through their joint publication Lyrical Ballads (1798). He served as Poet Laureate from 1843 until his death and is remembered for his poetry that celebrated nature and the ordinary lives of the working class.
