He designed and built Saltwell Towers before selling it to Gateshead Corporation in 1875. Recorded plaque organisation: Gateshead Metropolitan Borough Council.
William Wailes was a prominent Victorian-era stained glass manufacturer whose work significantly influenced ecclesiastical architecture across Britain; he also designed and built Saltwell Towers, which he later donated to the public.
