William Vesey-FitzGerald, born in County Clare in 1783, became a powerful British minister only to lose his own Clare seat in 1828. That sudden defeat broke the governing party and forced Catholic emancipation across the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. A man shaped by Clare ended up changing the rules for everyone in Clare.
